Plastic-Free-Naxos-Volunteers

Hi, lovelies! I know it’s been a rather quiet around here this month, and you’re probably wondering why. Well, the news is, I have started an initiative in my new home town of Naxos that has kept me rather busy. So I thought I’d tell you a little bit about it…

I love this island but sadly like most islands we are highly affected by plastic pollution that washes up on our beautiful beaches. I was tired of just accepting that this is just the way it is. So I founded Plastic Free Naxos.

Plastic Free Naxos was founded on the 2nd of March this year. The aim of our little initiative is to educate others about the importance of keeping our seas clean and ways that they can make a difference. We currently organise beach cleanups, bringing awareness about the magnitude of the problem to the people who help. We will be collaborating with some other initiatives in the coming months. The more we can do the better.

So far we have conducted 2 cleanups. Let me share with you some of the great work our volunteers did at the last cleanup…

Me with our amazing volunteers and the two truck loads of trash we collected

I love this quote by Robert Swan as it is so incredibly true…

The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.

We all need to take responsibility for our home. Anybody can make a difference. It’s as simple as making small changes. Here are some ideas of what you can do to help:

  • Every time you go to the beach pick up some of the trash you see
  • Switch to a reusable coffee cup and water bottle
  • Refuse plastic straws
  • Take a reusable shopping bag when going to the store
  • Switch to good old fashioned soap bars
  • Visit supermarkets where you can buy packaging free food

If you live in Naxos, come join us. Learn more about what we do or to get involved please find us on Facebook and Instagram.

And if you don’t live in Naxos, I urge you to join an initiative or start one in your home town.

Together we can make a difference!
