SELF CARE: 5 Tips for Bad Mental Health Days
SELF CARE: 5 Tips for Bad Mental Health Days

Hi, lovelies! We’ve all been there, you wake up feeling like you don’t want to get out of bed. You’ll make any excuse to avoid going into work. Your mind has waged warfare on your self-belief. And the thought of facing the day seems like the apocalypse cometh. This is what I refer to as a BAD mental health day. I’ve had my fair share of days like that. And so I wanted to share with you 5 of my tips to get through the rut.

1. Eat a Super Healthy Breakfast

When your mind is foggy often taking in some healthy food and fresh water can help clear the cobwebs. Reach for a big glass of water and keep a full bottle close by for constant refill. Make sure your water is room temperature so it’s not a shock to the system. On the food side, someone once told me that when you are feeling flat fruit always does the trick. And they are right. The natural sugar in fruit will help pick up your mood. So why not make a delicious and beautiful smoothie bowl. And remember you eat with your eyes first, so the colour is everything. Take the time to really enjoy your breakfast and make it part of your morning ritual. Rather than just wolfing it down.

2. Meditate

I’ve said it before, but I’m going to say it again. Meditation is so incredibly important and vital to keeping a good mental state. If you have never meditated before just try for 3-5mins at a time and use a guided app like Headspace. You can also practice breathing techniques with your meditation. This will help to remind you to be in the present. It helps to manage anxiety and for me, it reminds me that I am not the feelings I feel that day.

3. Practice Extra Good Hygiene

When your mind is in a bad state I feel it’s important to make sure your body is the complete opposite. Get in the shower, wash your hair even if you washed it yesterday, use your favourite body wash that you have been saving for a special occasion and exfoliate. Use a luscious body lotion or oil and spend extra time doing a little self-massage. Give yourself a facial, use a mask and moisturise. Paint your nails in a vibrant colour that perks your mood. And lastly put on the tiniest splash of make-up, even if its only mascara. Your body will feel like a million bucks and this will definitely add to improving your mental health.

4. Clear Your Space

Ok before you shout, “But Steph, I don’t even want to get out of bed”, I’m talking about simply clearing not full-blown spring cleaning. So what exactly do I mean, I’m talking about making your bed, putting dirty clothes in the laundry basket and washing your dishes. Just these three simple things always make me feel like my brain has more space to think. And it most definitely lessens my anxiety. I am also a fan of lighting a scented candle or burning some incense at this time. It’s a great way to “cleanse” the air and energy of your space.

5. Call a Friend

Sometimes just hearing a friendly voice of someone who just “gets” you can make the world of difference. So call a friend or text them. let them know you’re having an off day and are in need of a virtual hug. You don’t have to explain what you are going through unless you feel that it will help. But reach out and let those who care about you be there for you. And you can return the favour when they go through a rough patch. Never feel ashamed to speak your truth.

So there you have it, my 5 Tips for Bad Mental Health Days. I hope that this will help you in some small way.

Take care hunnies!
