Hi, lovelies! So it’s been a long time since I posted a TRAVEL post and this one is going to be a little different. I want to share with you a little about my move to a Greek Island. I know crazy right?! If you follow me on Instagram you will have seen that I moved to the Greek island of Naxos in December last year. Today I have officially been here for 2 months and I still pinch myself in the mornings when I wake up to make sure I’m not dreaming. Cause the truth is living here is a dream.

So I guess you’re wondering why I chose to leave the beautiful city of Cape Town and ship off to a Greek island. Well, there are multiple reasons why I chose to move, but for me, the biggest deciding factor was that I was yearning for change. Over the past two years, I have lost some people who were very dear to me. Losing those people was a huge eye-opener. It gave me pause to reflect on my life.

And I realised that I was seriously unhappy with the job I had at the time. I was becoming increasingly bored with parts of my lifestyle. And I wanted to shift my energy, I wanted to be somewhere where living life was more important than having a 9-5 desk job. And what better place than Greece?! The people are warm and friendly, the food is sublime, the lifestyle is focused on truly living every moment and the summer season by the sea is glorious.

I’ve absolutely loved it so far and feel like I’ve found my place. I have gotten lots of questions regarding my move. Here are the top 5 most asked questions…

1. Of all the islands, why Naxos?

This one is super easy to answer. I came to Naxos in 2017 to meet up with my mom for a vacation. I had never been to Greece before and was super excited. Obviously, Greece in summer, what a treat! I flew to Athens and the next day took my connecting flight to Naxos. When the plane landed in Naxos I burst into tears. Like full on tears. When my mom saw me she asked if I was crying because I was happy to see her. Although I was happy to see her the tears were because I felt like I had finally come home and like I was in the place my soul belonged. I can’t explain it but I was in love from that moment. So making the choice to move to Naxos was a no brainer. My soul wanted to be here and so did I.

2. Isn’t the island boring in the winter season?

Honestly, for me, no it isn’t. I kinda like that there is a time that it’s more local and quieter. We take the time to do little road trips to some of the cute villages and different beaches. The weather isn’t always cold and there are still days that you can enjoy a walk on the beach. Plus it gives me time to focus on my work and projects.

3. Did you find a job there?

Luckily I work remotely for a Product Design firm, so I don’t need to look for a job just yet. However, I will be doing some shop assistant work in the summer for a little extra cash.

4. Is Gin (my cat) coming to Naxos too?

Yes thankfully she is. However, she has to go through 3 months of vaccinations and tests before she can fly over. So she will only be joining me in May.

5. How’s your Greek coming along?

I wish I could say great but man oh man it’s really not an easy language. Learning the alphabet is the first step and I think I’ve figured it out. I’m trying my best and I manage to say hello and thank you. I know a few other words but it’s going to be an ongoing project.

Well that’s my story so far. There is still so much to learn, see and do here. And I’m so excited!

I hope you enjoyed learning a little about my experience.
